Ryan Ashton is an incredible individual. He and I have been chatting on and off for about eight or so years, and finally at the last ‘A Few Quiet Yarns’ event in Wellington, I was able to meet him in person. Ryan really knows networking and how to do it properly, so much so, that his event business ‘A Few Quiet Yarns’ features a personal introduction of everyone in the room to everyone else. It’s phenomenal.
What’s your business?
A Few Quiet Yarns – which is an event for people to meet the person not their suit or title, as people do business with people, not cloth, so we help you meet people and get to know them. We run monthly events in Auckland where I live and bimonthly in Wellington and Christchurch with November 15th next there. www.afqy.co.nz/sign-up is where you can find out about them, or my Linkedin Profile… I announce it all there.
What’s your role?
Chief Yarner – it’s kind of a laugh, it’s very on brand for the fact it is the title of me, the founder and leader, but also it shows we don’t take ourselves too seriously around titles.
What’s your two sentence elevator pitch for your business?
Personalising business by getting to meet the person, not their suit, accelerating trust making business easier to do with people you know.
What’s your favourite virtue?
Let me google virtue… is that like a value? Equality – we’re all human, especially regardless of suit or title.
What do you look for in a friend?
What’s your dominant characteristic?
I speak my mind.
What’s your biggest flaw?
My biggest flaw was bulling myself, ruminating the comments and things that were said and done to me long after my bullies forgot what they did. I became very reactionary as a result, and I work on it everyday, 3 deep breathes…
What’s your favourite occupation?
Aside from now… dancing – its expressive, fitness, fun, and exhilarating.
What’s your idea of happiness?
Hanging out with good people, having a laugh and a yarn.
What’s your idea of misery?
Anything not good for a living being, human or other.
If you weren’t you, who would you like to be?
Mmm… Maximus, General of the Northern Armies, defender of Rome! But I wouldn’t let that pompous emperor stab me in the back, I would go to lead Rome and make it for all the people
Where do you wish you could live?
Dunedin. It’s my home town, I love it! If you ask me where I would like to visit or live for a year, that would be another long list, including Rome, Milan, Mykonos.
What’s your favourite colour and favourite flower? Colour would be… Otago Blue and my favourite flower… I don’t really have one, but I’ll go with the Kowhai.
Who’s your favourite character in fiction?
Wow… that has to be Darth Vader
What’s your favourite swear word?
Varfunculo (That’s Italian for F off, you can really get into saying it!)
