What a fascinating man Brent is. He’s the new Domain Name Commissioner working under the InternetNZ umbrella but he’s also a AirBnB host with a guest house in Galle, Sri Lanka. And he’s from a beef farm in Taranaki.

What is your business?

I am the New Zealand Domain Name Comissioner, In essence this means I regulate the .nz domain name space – helping individuals, businesses and communities with their .nz online presence. At the commission we assist those who want to have a trusted and distinctively New Zealand online presence.

In addition, I am involved in two diverse family businesses, Green Meadows Beef (Taranaki) and Templeberg Villa (Galle, Sri Lanka). Both are great businesses for different reasons. With Green Meadows Beef I get to share my family’s passion to farm and create nutritional and great tasting food from farm to table. This is really exciting. Last year our innovative Mike’s Angus Beef and Beetroot burgers were finalists in the NZ food awards. Templeberg villa in Galle is rented out during the year and has been great for helping me understand what it’s like to be part of another culture – very different from my own. I work very hard to make sure the villa continues to be recognised for excellence on Tripadvisor and so I get to keep my ‘Superhost’ status on Airbnb.

What’s your role?

I’m the NZ Domain Name Commissioner and a Company Director.

What is your two sentence elevator pitch?

There is always a lot on my ‘to do’ list – which I attack with enthusiasm and passion. I have high expectations, because I ask, ‘why should you have low expectations?’

What’s your favourite virtue?

Gratitude. It pays to pinch yourself every now and again to be happy in a particular moment.

What do you look for in a friend?

Loyalty is very important to me. The best thing about returning to New Zealand from Melbourne, Australia has been catching up with old friends, I did not think I would ever connect with again (except on Facebook). The best friends are those who you continue with, like you always did – although 20 years has past!

What’s your dominant characteristic?

Doggedness. Got that?

What’s your biggest flaw?

Overthinking things. I hope my last response was ok? I could give you another answer.

What’s your favourite occupation?

Oh that’s easy; water slide tester. Hands down the best job in the world

What’s your idea of misery?

Being overworked and uninspired at the same time. Also happens to be my idea of hell.

If you weren’t you, who would you like to be?

Ariana Huffington. In her book ‘Thrive’ she made a convincing case for the need to rethink what it means to be successful in today’s world. I’m constantly asking myself ‘what’s my legacy?’

Where do you wish you could live?

Vancouver. Ever since doing a student exchange to Canada in the 1990s to Elbow, Saskatchewan I’ve had a soft spot for that country. I went there to learn French but was only able to get better at skiing and ice skating. All the Canadians I have met are ridiculously nice and have a well deserved reputation for being so.

What’s your favourite colour and flower?

Ocean Blue and Orchids.

Who’s your favourite character in fiction?

Dana Scully from the X Files for her relentless pursuit of the truth, humanity and depth.

What’s your favourite swear word?

Bullshit – said long and slow in a British accent
